SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball (7-6, 1-1 Southern Conference) fell to Wofford (3-10, 1-2 SoCon) 61-58 Saturday at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Wofford outscored Western Carolina 40-28 in the second half after being down by nine, 30-21, at the half.
Tied at 53, with 2:42 remaining, senior forward Shauna Terry's jumper gave the Catamounts it's last lead of the game. Wofford would go on to shoot 6-for-6 from the free throw line and score eight unanswered points to ice the game. Senior forward Rena Wakama hit a three-pointer, with two seconds left, to cut the Terrier lead to three as time expired.
Western Carolina looked strong coming out of halftime with Wakama's jumper to open the half putting the Catamounts up 32-21. A three-pointer by Wofford's Chantel Stokes propelled a 12-4 run by the Terriers to slice the Catamount lead to three, 36-31, with 15:27 remaining.
The Catamounts would maintain the lead for most of the second half until a pair of free throws by Logan Morris gave Wofford the lead, 45-44, with 8:22 left. Hana Haden answered, for Western Carolina, with a monster three-pointer to give the Catmaounts the lead back, 47-44. Western Carolina would maintain the lead until back-to-back jumpers by Jordan Frazier would tie the game at 53.
Wofford shot a scathing 55.6 percent in the second half after shooting an anemic 25 percent in the first 20 minutes. Western Carolina ticked up its shooting percentage in the second half with 34.5 percent besting its 26.5 in the first. The Terriers also won the rebound battle ripping down 46 rebounds to the Catamounts' 36.
Junior guard Justin Taylor was one of three Western Carolina players to score in double figures, leading the team with 14. All of Taylor's four field goals were from behind the three-point line.
Terry followed with 13, tying her career-high, and ripping down seven rebounds and adding four blocks. Sophomore guard Lindsay Simpson added 10.
Wofford was led by Frazier's 20 points and Morris added 16.
With Terry's four blocks, against Wofford, she now has 125 in her career nd needs six to break the Catamount blocks record of 130.
