Western Carolina volleyball's longest conference win streak since 2002 came to an end in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night as the Terriers of Wofford College handed the Catamounts their first five-set loss since Oct. 11, 2013. The Terriers won the first, second and fifth sets in route to the 3-2 victory.
A trio of seniors led the Catamounts as Addy George, Jordan Timmermann and Caitlin Piechota combined for 35 of WCU's 52 kills. George had 12 kills with two errors on 20 swings for a .500 attack percentage. She also added six blocks including one solo. Timmermann also had 12 kills to go along with 10 digs and four blocks. Piechota chipped in 11 kills and 12 digs which accounted for her 11th double-double of the season.
Fellow senior Brandi Anderson added eight kills and six blocks while freshman Katie O'Connor had five kills and a team-high eight blocks. Freshman setter Jo-Leigh Vervelde had an all-around match as she had 21 assists, 12 digs, six blocks and four kills. Junior setter Cristina Nazario added 20 assists, six digs and two service aces while junior libero Elyssa Mulheron had 14 digs and two service aces.
Both teams combined for 20 service errors in the match, seven from WCU and 13 for Wofford.
Wofford took the opening set 25-20 before earning a 2-0 lead due to a 25-18 victory in set number two. The third set went WCU's way, 25-19, before a 25-20 fourth set victory by the Catamounts tied the match at two. The fifth set swung Wofford's way 15-12 giving the Terriers their third conference victory of the season.
The Catamounts fall to 13-12 overall and 6-5 in SoCon play this season while the Terriers improve to 11-15 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
A 9-2 run midway through the first set swung the momentum Wofford's way as they cruised to a 25-20 victory. Taylor Baird led all attackers with six kills for the Terriers while WCU's senior trio each had two kills in the opening period.
The second set saw the Terriers slowly pull away from the Catamounts throughout the set as they eventually won by a seven-point margin, 25-18. Baird and Ellie Tallman each chipped in five kills for the Terriers while Anderson led the Catamounts with four.
After the long break, the Catamounts never trailed in the third set as they coasted to a 25-19 victory. All six starters for the Catamounts registered at least one kill in the set while Piechota led with four. WCU also had four blocks in the period with Anderson having a hand in three. The Terriers were led by Baird who had five kills in the period.
Wofford streaked out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set before the Catamounts slowly began to work their way back into the match. A block by O'Connor and Vervelde eventually tied the set at 17. After the two teams traded the next few points the Catamounts closed out the set with a 6-1 run that was capped with a solo block by George. George and Timmermann led the Catamounts with three kills each in the set while George added a pair of blocks. Liz Buterbaugh led the Terriers with five kills.
The fifth set featured eight tie scores and three lead changes in the most competitive set of the match. With the set tied at 11 the Terriers were able to close out the match with a 4-1 run that featured two WCU errors and a pair of Terrier kills. Baird led the Terriers with three kills in the period while George had three kills for the Catamounts.
Baird led the Terriers with 20 kills throughout the match while Bella Santoro, Buterbaugh and Tallman each had 10.
The Catamounts return to action Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. as they return home to host Chattanooga. The Mocs defeated the Catamounts 3-0 earlier this season in Tennessee.
