The Western Carolina volleyball team closed out the 2014 regular season with a 3-1 loss on the road at Mercer Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts will now set their sights on the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament hosted by UNCG. WCU will enter the event as the fifth seed and will face either UNCG or ETSU. The two went 1-1 against one another and have the same winning percentage against every team in the conference. The final tiebreaker to determine seeding is the NCAA RPI following the conclusion of the regular season. The final regular season RPI will be released at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
In Sunday's match, senior Addy George led the Catamounts with 13 kills and six blocks. She had just one error on the day to finish with a .600 hitting percentage. Senior Caitlin Piechota added 12 kills and 13 digs for her 53rd career double-double. Piechota also had two service aces to lead the team.
Senior Jordan Timmermann chipped in eight kills, seven digs, five blocks and a service ace while freshmen Katie O'Connor and Jo-Leigh Vervelde each had six kills. O'Connor added six blocks while Vervelde had 20 assists, 13 digs and two blocks.
Junior libero Elyssa Mulheron had a team-high 19 digs while junior setter Cristina Nazario dished out 18 assists to go with eight digs.
The Bears won the opening set 25-23 before the Catamounts took set two, 25-19. The final two sets went Mercer's way, 25-18 and 25-17.
Mercer ends the regular season with an 11-19 slate and a 6-10 SoCon record while the Catamounts finish the regular season with a 16-14 record and 9-7 conference mark.
The Bears had four attackers end with double-digit kills including Molly Locke (19), Ellie James (15), Emily Krogman (11) and Carolina Carlton (11).
The Bears led the Catamounts in digs (76-66), hitting percentage (.225-.209) and service aces (9-3) while the Catamounts led in blocks (12-7).
Western Carolina will next be in action at the SoCon Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The tournament is set for Nov. 22-24. The final bracket and match times will be announced Monday evening.
