For the first time since 2001 the Catamounts of the Western Carolina volleyball team will end the season with just one home loss after a 3-0 sweep of Wofford inside the Ramsey Center Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts are now 9-1 at home this season. WCU honored its four seniors prior to the match including
Brandi Anderson,
Addy George,
Caitlin Piechota and
Jordan Timmermann.
The four along with their teammates needed just an hour and 16 minutes to dispatch the visiting Terriers, 3-0. Piechota led the way with 14 kills and 10 assists for her 52nd double-double of her career. George led the way defensively with eight blocks including one solo stop. She also added five kills. Timmermann had five kills, six digs and two blocks while Anderson added four kills and a block.
Freshman Katie O'Connor continued her strong weekend of action with seven kills and a block while freshman Jo-Leigh Vervelde had five kills, 21 assists, four blocks and three digs.
Junior setter Cristina Nazario had 13 assists and six digs while junior libero Elyssa Mulheron led the team with 13 digs.
The Catamounts won 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21 to improve to 16-13 overall and 9-6 in SoCon play. The Terriers fell to 12-19 overall and 4-10 in conference.
The opening set was close throughout but the Terriers only led 1-0, 2-0 and 2-1. With the score tied at nine, WCU used a short 4-0 run, that featured two kills from Piechota and one from O'Connor, to take a 13-9 lead. The Catamounts would maintain the lead until a 4-0 run by the Terriers tied the set at 20. From that point on Wofford would score just one more point the rest of the set as WCU went on to win 25-21. George closed out the set with a kill off an assist from Vervelde.
The Catamounts opened up the second set with a 5-0 run and never looked back as they held the lead the entire way. Piechota had five kills in the set while O'Connor added four. WCU won 25-19.
The third set was back-and-forth early but with the score tied at 11 WCU used a 5-1 run to break open the set. The Catamounts never trailed from that point on and a kill from Piechota ended senior day with the Cats winning 25-21. Vervelde led the way in the period with four kills while Piechota added three.
Wofford was led by Taylor Baird who had 14 kills on the day.
With the win, the Catamounts have now defeated every Southern Conference member this season at least once. WCU closes out the regular season next Sunday at Mercer with a 2 p.m. start.
