Western Carolina Women's Tennis Falls to Appalachian State

Boone, N.C. - Megan McLinden won her seventh match of the season as Western Carolina fell to rival, Appalachian State, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in Boone.

Beginning in doubles competition, WCU's Sara Ruiz Pajares and Erin Maguire fell to Brianna Armellino and Megan Mullen at the No. 3 doubles match, 8-4.

Appalachian State (6-15, 2-6) clinched the doubles point in the No. 1 doubles match as Gabrielle Wreder and Mackenzie LaSure defeated Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol of Western Carolina (1-15-1,0-7), 8-7.

The Catamounts also fell in the No. 2 doubles match as McLinden and Nicole Nielly lost to Clare Cox and McKayla Zupan, 8-7.

In singles competition, WCU's Bettiol dropped the No. 2 match to LaSure in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

At the No. 5 singles, Jessica Thaggard defeated Nielly, 6-4, 6-0. App State clinched the match with a win at the No. 6 singles as Mullen defeated Maguire, 6-3, 6-3.

At the No. 4 singles match, the Catamounts Ruiz Pajares fell to Armellino, 6-4, 6-2. WCU's Kissell dropped her match in a third set tie-break, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

McLinden gained the sole point for Western Carolina as she defeated Wreder in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The Catamounts host the Furman Paladins on Wednesday, April 9, at 3 p.m. from the tennis courts at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
