The Western Carolina volleyball team fell 3-1 on the road at Furman University Saturday night. The Catamounts won the opening set but the Paladins rattled off three-straight sets to take the Southern Conference match-up.
The Catamounts fall to 7-9 on the year and 0-2 in SoCon action. The Paladins are now 9-4 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play.
Freshman Jo-Leigh Vervelde continued her quest for a triple-double as she ended the match with 10 kills, 18 assists and eight digs. Senior Addy George, Jordan Timmermann and Caitlin Piechota all added double-digit kills to the cause. George had 10 kills and a team-high six blocks including four solo stops. Timmermann has 10 kills and 16 digs for her fourth double-double of the season while Piechota had a team-high 11 kills and 13 digs for her third-straight double-double and sixth of the year.
Junior setter Cristina Nazario had 21 assists and eight digs while junior libero Elyssa Mulheron added 15 digs.
The Catamounts won the opening set 25-19 before dropping the final three sets 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21.
The Paladins out-dug the Cats 77-63 while out-hitting WCU .264 to .232.
The first set was back-and-forth almost the entire way. The Catamounts, who led 21-19 late, used a four-point run to close out the set. Timmermann, Vervelde and George had back-to-back-to-back kills to push the first set point. Following a Furman timeout George picked up a solo block to close out the set 25-21.
The Paladins jumped out to an early lead in the second set but the Catamounts battled back to tie the set at 10. The set went back-and-forth from there till the Paladins put together a 5-0 run to end the set 25-19.
The third set was another hard fought battle with neither team taking much of an advantage. Once again a late run was the difference as the Paladins closed out the set with a 6-1 jaunt, 25-20.
Furman took the fourth set wire-to-wire to close out its second conference win of the season 25-21.
The Catamounts will be back in action Friday, Oct.3 at 8 p.m. as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on Samford University.
