Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Double OT Tie With Furman Sunday

Box Score Sept. 28, 2014

Box Score |

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie with defending Southern Conference champion Furman Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

The Catamounts move to 4-3-4 on the season and 1-0-1 in the Southern Conference. Furman goes to 7-2-1 and 1-0-1 in the SoCon. It was the first tie this season for the Paladins.

Furman got on the board early in the first half. At the 10:28 mark, after spending most of the first 10 minutes on Western's Carolina side of the field, the Paladins struck to get the early 1-0 lead. Hannah Stanifer took a pass from Furman assist leader India Robinson and headed it into the goal.

The Furman goal seemed to spur on Western Carolina who turned up its offense and buckled down on defense. That tenacity would pay off 10 minutes after the Furman goal. Junior forward Markie-Lynn Studnicky found freshman Chandler Arrowood in front of the box, about five yards out, and Arrowood sailed it past Furman goalie Rose Hull. It was Arrowood's second goal this season and Studnicky's third assist on the year.

After the two teams got on the scoreboard neither found the back of the net for the remainder of the 90 minutes played in the game.

Western Carolina weathered 12 Furman corner kicks and 18 Paladin shots. Through all the shots taken by Furman, only three were on goal and sophomore Carly Tinstman had two saves.

The Catamounts have scored at least one goal over the last six games and have either tied or won its last six games. One other note of record, Western Carolina has only given up one goal in the 11 games played this season.

Western Carolina heads back on the road for a four-game road swing beginning Friday when it travels to Chattanooga. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
