Senior outside hitter
Jordan Timmermann amassed 16 kills on 30 total attacks without committing an error as Western Carolina scored a straight-set, 3-0, blanking of Georgia State Wednesday night at the GSU Sports Arena. The Catamounts won by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18 to pick up their first victory of the season.
Timmermann posted a sizzling .533 attack percentage to lead the Catamount offensive attack while middle blocker Nicole Ford tallied five kills on eight attacks for a team-high .625 percentage in the win. Ford was joined by Addy George with five kills while senior Caitlin Piechota put down six kills with 10 digs for the Purple & Gold. George charted a pair of solo blocks with Timmermann, Ford and Brandi Anderson combining for six block assists.
Libero Elyssa Mulheron led the team with 17 digs while setters Jo-Leigh Vervelde and Cristina Nazario dished out 18 and 16 assists, respectively.
"I was pleased with our overall effort and focus tonight, but I do feel that we still need to get a little more in sync offensively," said WCU head coach Karen Glover following the match. "Jordan (Timmermann) had a great game offensively. She was incredibly smart tonight with her attack. I also felt our middles did a good job at the net defensively; they had a lot of touches tonight, and I think that frustrated the opposing hitters."
WCU improved to 10-4 all-time against the Panthers, winning back-to-back meetings with GSU, and claiming victory for the third time in the past five series matches.
Behind the serve of Piechota, the Catamounts rattled off four-straight points to break-open a 7-7 tie in the first set, taking an 11-7 lead WCU would never relinquish. Five-consecutive service points by Vervelde handed the visitors their largest lead of the opening frame at eight, 20-12, as the Catamounts cruised to the 25-19 winner.
Neither team was able to build a substantial lead until late in the second set. Trailing by three, 22-19, the Catamounts were able to rally by outscoring the Panthers 6-to-1 down the stretch behind Mulheron's serve and Timmermann putting the set away with a kill, 25-23.
Western Carolina never trailed in the final set, pulling ahead by as many as eight to complete the sweep, 25-19.
Georgia State (1-3) was paced by Deidra Bohannon with a double-double effort of 19 kills and 17 digs. Gabby Serafin just missed double-digits with nine digs for the home squad, while Natalia Nieto passed out 38 assists in the loss.
Western Carolina travels to in-state foe High Point on Sunday (Sept. 7) afternoon with match time at 2:00 pm before opening the home portion of its 2014 schedule Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7:00 pm in the Ramsey Center.
