The Western Carolina volleyball team fell in Southern Conference action at Wofford Friday night. The Terriers nearly doubled the Catamounts in kills to earn the 3-0 sweep. Freshman Devan Ingram led the Catamounts with eight kills while not committing a single attack error.
The loss drops WCU’s record to 7-19 on the season and 2-8 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers improved to 14-12 overall and 5-4 in the SoCon.
The Terriers took the opening set 25-22 before winning the second set 25-20. The third and final set was 25-22 in Wofford’s favor.
Ingram also had three blocks in the match along with a pair of digs. Freshman Alyssa Zupan added six kills and two blocks while senior Nicole Ford had a team-high six blocks and four kills. Sophomore Jo-Leigh Vervelde also added four kills to go along with 11 assists, 12 digs and three blocks.
Senior setter Cristina Nazario had 13 assists and five digs in the match while senior libero Elyssa Mulheron added 13 digs.
The Terriers had two student-athletes reach double-figures in kills including Danni Densford who had 14 and Colleen Reilly who added 11.
The opening set was tight the entire way. With the score tied at 21 the Terriers used back-to-back kills by Reilly to open up a 23-21 lead. A service ace by Jessica Graham gave Wofford their first set point of the night at 24-21. Ford kept the Terriers from closing out the set with a kill by Molly Mayo answered on the next point to give Wofford a 25-22 victory.
The Catamounts jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the second set but the Terriers eventually fought their way back into the set and tied it at 17. The set would be tied at 18 and 19 before the Terriers used a 4-0 run to open up a 23-19 lead. Zupan ended the run with a kill but the Terriers scored the final two points of the set to claim a 25-20 victory.
The third set was back-and-forth early but a 6-0 run by the Catamounts midway through opened up an 18-13 lead for WCU. The Terriers responded with a 9-1 run of their own to retake a 22-19 lead. The Catamounts did not go down easy as they cut the lead to two at 24-22 but a kill by Lauren Miller ended the match, 25-22.
The Catamounts will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm as they travel to ETSU.
