The Western Carolina volleyball team fell Saturday night on the road at Southern Conference rival UNCG. The Spartans defeated the Catamounts 3-0 to earn their first Southern Conference victory of the season.
With the loss, the Catamounts fall to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in SoCon play. The Spartans improved to 11-8 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
Freshman Alyssa Zupan and sophomore Kaycey Cermin led the Catamount offense with five kills each. Sophomores Katie O'Connor and Jo-Leigh Vervelde each had a team-high three blocks while Vervelde added 13 digs and eight assists. Senior setter Cristina Nazario had a team-high nine assists while sophomore libero Lucy Lambert dug up 16 balls.
The Catamounts hit just .017 as a unit while the Spartans connected on .303 of their attack attempts. UNCG had three players with double-digit kills including Ashley Muench who led the squad with 13 kills.
UNCG led almost the entire match as they swept the sets, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-19.
Western Carolina will return to action next Friday, Oct. 9 at Mercer for a 6 pm match.
