Furman Defeats Women’s Volleyball 3-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Western Carolina volleyball had its two-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 (8-25, 26-24, 15-25, 13-25) loss to Furman Saturday at Alley Gym.

The Catamounts fall to 10-19, 4-9 in the Southern Conference while Furman improves to 16-6 and 10-2 in the SoCon.

A pair of Catamounts recorded double-doubles: Jo-Leigh Vervelde had 15 assists and 12 digs while Cristina Nazario had 13 assists and 13 digs.

Furman was dominant in the first game scoring the first seven points of the match setting the tone for the rest of the game. WCU halted the Paladin scoring its first point at 7-1. After giving up the point, Furman went on an 11-1 run to secure the game win.

Western Carolina bounced back in the second game taking it 26-24. The Catamounts took a page from Furman scoring the first five points before the Paladins could score. WCU led until Furman tied it at 10 and it was tied twice more at 13 and 24. WCU won the final two points on a kill by Devan Ingram and a Furman attack error.

Furman controlled the final two games to secure the win.

Western Carolina returns home Saturday to host Mercer. The match is set for noon before Catamount football hosts its final home game of the season against Furman at 3:30 p.m.
