Raleigh, N.C. -
For a second-time this season – and coming in just his second tournament of the semester – Western Carolina senior Tyler Lail recorded a career-best finish on Tuesday, finishing tied for second at the weather-shortened Wolfpack Intercollegiate, which concluded at the par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Lail carded a career-low round on Monday with a 2-under par, 69, and followed it up by shooting 1-under, 70, on Tuesday, which matched his previous career-best 18 hole score. He finished just three strokes in arrears of the individual medalist – first-round leader, Robin Petersson from Augusta, who posted back-to-back rounds of 68 for a two-day score of 136.
Lail’s two-day tally of 139 was the best 36-hole score of his Catamount career, while also tying for the ninth-best, two-round individual total in program history. In the season-opener, Lail finished third at the Rees Jones Invitational.
Western Carolina advanced two spots in the final standings collectively as a team, shooting a season-low team round of 296 on Tuesday to finish 11th in the 16-team field with a score of 597.
Opening on the back nine, Lail’s lone blemish on the final day came on his first hole with a bogey on the par-4 10th. The Conover, N.C., native bounced back to chart 10-consecutive pars before the first of two birdies on the par-4 third. His final birdie came on the par-3 sixth, closing the day with three-straight pars.
Lail, who led the tournament with seven birdies on Monday, finished tied for third with a combined nine birdies, while also pacing the field in par-5 scoring at 4-under (4.50). He turned in a team-best 23 pars over the two-days in the state capital.
Sophomore Jackson Bishop climbed into the top 10 early in the round on Tuesday before finishing tied for 30th overall with a two-day score of 147. Bishop followed up his first-round, 3-over par 74 with a 2-over round of 73. Three birdies through his first six holes pushed the Gainesville, Ga., product to 3-under par for the final round. However, he closed with five bogies and seven pars after his third birdie.
True freshman Mark David Johnson finished a stroke better in the second round with a 4-over, 75, for a two-day score of 151 in a tie for 53rd, while sophomore Bright Julamool was four strokes better on Tuesday at 7-over, 78, and a final tally of 160, tied for 86th. Senior Taylor Durand finished 91st overall, shooting 167 (86-81). Julamool and Durand both carded three birdies on Tuesday while Johnson paced the Catamounts with four birdies on the final day of competition.
Shooting a final round of 8-under par, 276, Augusta rallied seven spots over the event’s last 18 holes to claim the team championship by two strokes over a two-way tie for the runner-up spot. Augusta finished with a two-day score of 573 with UNCG and North Carolina State placing tied for second at 575. Lipscomb and Campbell both shot 579 to finish tied for fourth to round out the top five finishing teams.
Fellow Southern Conference foe, Chattanooga (586), finished tied for seventh while Wofford (601) was 14th in the final standings.
Western Carolina returns to action Oct. 19-20 at the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Elon University at the Alamance Country Club. The 54-hole event will be spread over two days with 36 holes on Monday and 18 the following day.
