Cullowhee, N.C. -
For the first time since 2001, the Wofford Terriers defeated the Western Carolina men's basketball team inside the Ramsey Center Saturday afternoon, 75-55. The 20-point loss is the largest margin of victory for an opponent inside the Ramsey Center since Davidson defeated the Catamounts 92-59 on Feb. 17, 2007. Senior Karl Cochran of Wofford led all scorers with 26 points as he hit seven 3-pointers in the game.
The Catamounts led by three early in the game but an 11-2 run by the Terriers gave Wofford a lead it would never relinquish the rest of the game. WCU was able to cut the deficit to three early in the second half but that would be as close as the Catamounts would come as the Terriers used a tenacious defense to hold the Catamounts to 30.5 percent shooting including 26.3 percent from 3-point range.
WCU was led by junior Torrion Brummitt who scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and snagged two steals in the game. Senior James Sinclair nearly had a double-double as he finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sinclair struggled to find his range as he hit just four of 19 shots from the field.
All told, WCU's backcourt, who has led the Catamounts all season, combined to hit nine of 39 shots in the game (23.1%).
Junior Mike Brown had nine points and six rebounds while Rhett Harrelson added six points and four rebounds.
The Catamounts out-rebounded Wofford 42-31 including grabbing 19 offensive boards but those 19 offensive rebounds turned into just 12 second chance points. Wofford had just six offensive boards but was able to score 10 second chance tallies.
The loss drops Western Carolina's record to 13-14 overall and 8-7 in Southern Conference play. Wofford is now 21-6 overall and 12-2 in conference action.
The Catamounts will be back in action this Tuesday, Feb. 17, as they host non-conference opponent Cleveland State. The Vikings are 15-11 this season and are second in the Horizon League with a 9-3 conference record. CSU defeated the Catamounts last season in Cleveland, 66-55.
