CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Senior Megan McLinden extended her singles win streak to six-straight as the Western Carolina women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
McLinden took down Rokia Sacko in the No. 1 singles match to earn one of WCU's two points in the match. She won the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a back-and-forth match. McLinden is now 7-2 in singles play this season including 5-1 in the No. 1 slot.
WCU's other point came in the No. 3 singles match as junior Nicole Nielly defeatedSarah Rieckmannin straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1. Nielly is now 4-5 in singles matches this season all of which came in the No. 3 spot.
McLinden and junior Shannon Bettiol teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-4 over Stina Magnusson and Mary Walker Mixon. WCU dropped the doubles point after having to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match due to only having five player and falling in the No.2 doubles 8-5.
Freshman Montse Mesalles put up a strong fight in the No. 5 singles match as she won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2). Mixon came back to take the second and third sets 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.
Bettiol fell at No. 2 to Magnusson 7-5, 7-5 while junior Erin Maguire fell at No. 4 to Catherine White 6-4, 6-3.
The Catamounts will be back in action Friday, March 20 at Presbyterian College for a 2 pm match.
