The Western Carolina volleyball team closed out the 2016 regular season with a 3-0 sweep of The Citadel Saturday afternoon. The victory earned WCU the No. 7 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Championship. WCU ended up in a tie in the standings with Furman at 6-10 but WCU earned the tiebreaker after scoring more points over the Paladins in their two matches, 138-132.
WCU’s sweep of the Bulldogs marked the Catamounts first true road win of the season. The Catamounts entered the match 0-11 on the road but 2-3 in neutral site matches.
With the victory, WCU improved to 11-18 overall on the year and 6-10 in league play. The Bulldogs fell to 8-24 overall and 1-15 in conference action.
WCU dominated in the victory winning the first two sets 25-18 before securing the victory with a 25-14 win.
Sophomore Moea Osbey led the Catamount attack with 13 kills and just one error for a .429 hitting percentage. Freshman Abigail Veit was not far behind with 12 kills while adding 14 digs for a double-double.
Freshman Aleah Keaton and sophomore Alyssa Zupan chipped in seven kills. Keaton added five blocks while Zupan had eight digs and a pair of blocks. Junior setter Jo-Leigh VerVelde dished out 33 assists and dug up 14 balls. She also had four blocks in the victory. Freshman libero Meagan Sanchez led the team with a match-high 25 digs.
The Catamounts hit .235 as a squad and held the Bulldogs to a .042 hitting percentage. Some of those Bulldog hitting errors came courtesy of WCU’s nine blocks.
WCU will face No. 2 seed UNCG in the upcoming Southern Conference Championship hosted by Samford University Nov. 19-21. The Catamount/Spartan match-up will take place at 6 pm (EST) on Saturday, Nov. 19.
