Kent, Ohio -
Steady rainfall and unfavorable afternoon forecasts have prompted officials at Kent State University to cancel Saturday’s regular-season between Western Carolina and the homestanding Golden Flashes at Schoonover Stadium.
Kent State (41-12) claimed Thursday’s opener, 5-4, by responding with a three-run bottom of the seventh inning to take the opener. The Flashes won the series with Friday evening’s 3-1 victory.
Western Carolina (25-28, 15-9 SoCon) finished the regular season tied with UNCG for second-place in the Southern Conference standings with Furman playing a Saturday doubleheader with Upstate rival, Wofford, with a chance to make it a three-way deadlock for the runner-up spot. Mercer took 2-of-3 from UNCG this week to claim the regular season championship.
Complete final 2016 standings and seeding for next week’s Southern Conference Baseball Championship at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., will be released later on Saturday afternoon.
