Western Carolina Eliminates Nebraska with Saturday's 4-1 Victory

Box Score June 4, 2016

Box Score  |     |  Post-Game Press Conference

Clemson, S.C. - Three Catamount pitchers combined to limit Nebraska to five singles and just one run as fourth-seeded Western Carolina stayed alive in the NCAA Clemson Regional, ousting No. 3 seed Nebraska with a 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. WCU turned a season-high five double-plays in the victory, rebounding from Friday night's regional-opening loss.

Western Carolina (31-30) advances into Sunday's elimination game where it will meet top-seeded Clemson Tigers - a 12-2 loser to the No. 2 seed Oklahoma State on Saturday - with first pitch at Noon. Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPNU with Tom Hart and Mike Rooney on the call, with live streaming audio from the Catamount Sports Network available online at CatamountSports.com.

Left-handers Taylor Durand and Brendan Nail, and right-handed closer B.J. Nobles combined to limit the Cornhuskers to five singles while working around eight walks -- six coming in the first two frames -- to help the squad advance. In a starting role, Durand wiggled off the bases-loaded hook twice in the opening two frames after walking them full in both the first and second innings with a combined six walks. The Oak Ridge, Tenn., native tossed the first three innings hitless and only allowed one unearned run on two hits with a strikeout.

Coming out of the bullpen for just the second-time this season, Nail (5-6) scored the victory after tossing three scoreless relief innings, scattering three hits and working around a pair of walks. Raleigh, N.C., native B.J. Nobles tallied his fifth save of the season, perfect through the final two frames with a strikeout to seal the win.

Senior Kramer Ferrell paced the Catamount offense with a 3-for-3 outing, reaching a fourth time with a walk and tallying the only extra base hit of the contest with a second-inning double. The Ellensburg, Wash., native also tallied his team-leading 64th RBI as four different players drove home runs in the winning effort.

Sophomore Brett Pope stayed hot at the plate in regional play, collecting his regional-leading sixth hit in a 2-for-4 showing, while classmate Caleb Robinson also finished 2-for-4. WCU got run-scoring singles from junior Matt Smith (1-for-3), freshman Andrew Bullock (1-for-4), and senior Reece Strong (1-for-1) in a pinch-hit role as WCU tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning.

Western Carolina got on the board in the first inning as senior Garrett Brown drew a lead-off walk and was moved to second on Pope's first single into left. A double-play moved Brown further into scoring position at third where Smith delivered a two-out RBI on a single down the right field line to put WCU ahead, 1-0.

The Catamounts have scored in the first inning in 32 of their 61 seasonal games in 2016.

The lead stood until the fourth inning when the Cornhuskers (37-22) tallied an unearned run as Steven Reveles singled and came home on a Jake Schleppenbach single to knot the game at one.

Two innings later, the Catamounts took the lead for good as Ferrell ignited the two-out rally with a single to right-field. Two batters later, Bullock drove a pitch into center field to bring in the go-ahead marker, 2-1. WCU would tack on two insurance markers in the eighth on a Ferrell single before Strong poked a pinch hit single through the right side to bring home the team's fourth run to provide the final tally.

Nebraska reliever Reece Eddins (4-3) suffered the loss after entering the game in the sixth and facing one batter in the eighth of a two-inning appearance. Starter Jake Meyers scattered six hits over five innings with three walks and three strikeouts. The five Cornhusker hits were scattered between five different players with Jake Placzek reaching three times with a 1-for-1 with a pair of walks. Schleppenbach drove in the lone marker with his single.

Saturday's game was marred by two 60-plus minute weather delays with the tarp pulled over the playing surface twice.
