CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
After having its match rained out Saturday afternoon at Presbyterian College, the Western Carolina women’s tennis team returned home to face North Carolina A&T at the Catamount Athletic Complex. WCU picked up a 6-1 victory over the Aggies to move to 2-0 at home this season.
"I thought the girls played really well today,” said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. “We mixed up our doubles to get a little different look and I thought both teams played well together especially being their first time together this season. It's always nice to get a win at home and the crowd today was awesome. It made for a great match day atmosphere and I know the girls benefited from that level of excitement."
The Aggies were forced to give WCU a 1-0 lead in the match due to only having five players available to play. NC A&T forfeited the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches to the Catamounts. Needing just one doubles match to clinch the doubles point junior Elizabeth Ansari and freshman Lauren McCall made quick work of their No. 2 match defeating the Aggies 6-0 to claim the point.
Sophomore Savannah Taranto and freshman Jordan Strickland went on to win the No. 1 doubles match 6-4 despite the point already being held by WCU.
Singles began with the forfeit at No. 6 which gave WCU a 2-0 lead. The third WCU point came as Strickland took down Angelica Martinez at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1. The Catamounts would clinch the match as McCall took down Klara Smolikova at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0.
Freshman Madison Riley improved to a team best 5-1 in singles action this season as she topped Kanishka Chawla 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. The final Catamount victory came at No. 3 as sophomore Alexa Webb won 6-2, 6-1.
North Carolina A&T won the final match of the day at No. 1 as Khalia Powell outlasted Taranto 6-4, 7-5.
WCU will return to action Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Catamounts host North Carolina Central and King in a split doubleheader beginning at noon.
