Box Score

Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska starting pitcher Jake Meyers tossed a five-hit complete game shutout on Sunday afternoon as the Cornhuskers handed Western Carolina a 10-0 defeat at Haymarket Park / Hawks Field, preventing the Catamounts from completing the series sweep.

Meyers struck out four against one walk, scattering the five WCU hits in tossing his first complete game. He was very efficient on Sunday, and retired 18 of the final 20 batters in a row to conclude the game and secure the victory -- Nebraska's first in four series meetings with the Catamounts over the past two years.

Western Carolina (7-8) never threatened the Cornhuskers on a blustery Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts were unable to put more than one base runner aboard in an inning in the loss. Junior Caleb Robinson collected two of WCU's five hits on the game including a double to left-center field, finishing 2-for-4 on the day. Infield classmate Brett Pope and redshirt sophomore outfielder Matthew Koehler each singled in the loss, with sophomore Andre Bullock dropping a pinch hit single into center field in the ninth.

Redshirt senior Bryson Bowman finished 0-for-3 on the day, but drew a third-inning walk to extend his reached base safely streak to 15-straight games -- each game this season. His classmate, Matt Smith, saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end with a 0-for-4 outing.

WCU starter Brendan Nail (1-3) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs on eight hits with four walks and a strikeout. Reliever Chad Mabini was touched for a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Junior Jacob Breakfield was impressive in his inning of relief work, striking out the side in the sixth inning as a part of four-straight K's by the Catamount bullpen, with Corey Sikes facing the minimum in an inning of relief work. Sophomore Michael Davis pitched an inning, allowing Nebraska's final run on one hit with an HBP.

Nebraska (6-8) scored in bunches over the first three frames including two runs in the bottom of the first and three in both the second and third to grab an 8-0 advantage. The home squad tacked on two insurance markers in the fifth and eighth innings to provide the final tally.

Four of the Cornhuskers' 12 hits went for extra bases with Scott Schreiber leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance with a double and two RBI. Alex Raburn tallied two singles in a 2-for-4 showing, with Jake Schleppenbach plating two on a triple.

Coming off the eight-game road swing, Western Carolina is scheduled to open a five-game home stand on Wednesday evening against Kennesaw State (7-8). First pitch at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Kent State (9-5) comes to Cullowhee next weekend for a three-game nonconference series after taking 2-of-3 at the College of Charleston. The Golden Flashes had two midweek games against Western Illinois canceled with WCU representing their next opponent.
