Columbia, Mo. - Missouri designated hitter Robbie Glendinning capped a three-hit night with a game-winning RBI single through the right side as the 26th-ranked Tigers rallied past upset-minded Western Carolina, 7-6, in 10 innings Wednesday night in nonconference action at Taylor Stadium.
With WCU leading 6-5 through the top of the seventh inning, outfielder Trey Harris knotted the game with a one-out home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The deadlock continued into extra innings before Brian Sharp dropped a two-base hit down the left field line to lead-off the decisive final frame. He was then sacrificed to third base by Chris Cornelius. With runners at the corners, Glendinning punched a 1-2 pitch through the right side to score pinch runner Johnny Balsamo with the game-winning run.
Senior Matt Smith and junior Caleb Robinson both posted two-hit games for the Catamounts, both recording a double. Smith finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 11-straight games, while Robinson was 2-for-3 with two RBI on a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh that pushed WCU ahead, 6-5.
Junior transfer Cameron Blaquiere bounced a bases loaded, three-run double down the third base line in the second inning as Western Carolina rallied back from a two-run deficit to grab a 3-2 lead.
Tied at three through four complete, WCU got back-to-back singles by Bryson Bowman and Smith to open the fifth inning. Bowman reached safely for the 12th-straight game. A balk moved both runners further into scoring position when Matthew Koehler reached on an infield error, securing the RBI as Bowman scored regardless on the play. Caleb Robinson then lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to hand the Catamounts the game's largest lead at 5-3 headed to the bottom of the fifth inning.
Missouri plated solo runs in four-straight innings between the fourth and seventh to keep WCU within reach, tying the game on the Harris homer in the seventh. The Catamount defense managed to keep the Tigers from winning in regulation with several game-saving defensive plays to set-up extra innings including a 3-6-1 double-play in the eighth to overcome a lead-off walk.
The late inning rally by Mizzou thwarted the strong pitching effort of Catamount starter Dillon Bray, who scattered eight hits over six innings. The Hamptonville, N.C., native surrendered five runs, striking out five against three walks. Senior reliever Korey Anderson (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits, walking four -- one intentionally -- with two strikeouts.
Glendinning, who missed the past two games prior to Wednesday's nonconference affair, finished 3-for-4 with a RBI. Sharp recorded two hits in a 2-for-5 performance. Brett Bond homered in the bottom of the first inning to give Missouri the early advantage, finishing 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.
Freshman reliever T.J. Sikkema (3-0) retired 10-straight over the final four frames to score the victory for Mizzou, striking out six in 3.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Tiger starter Liam Carter was chased after the first inning, allowing three runs on two hits. Cole Bartlett set-up Sikkema with 5.1 innings of work, holding WCU to three runs on five hits.
Western Carolina (5-7) travels to Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game nonconference set against the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-6), winners of three-straight. First pitch of Friday's series opener is scheduled for 5:05 pm ET / 4:05 pm CT.
