SPARTANBURG, S.C. -
The Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped a Southern Conference match 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Wofford College but a pair of freshmen broke the WCU single season doubles wins record. Freshmen Jordan Strickland and Lauren McCall each picked up their 14th doubles win of the season as they teamed up to win at No. 2.
The previous doubles single season win record was held by Shannon Bettiol (2013-16) who won 13 doubles matches during the 2016 season.
"We have some growing to do as a team before we will deserve to win all of these close matches," said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. "I do believe we can get there if the girls set their minds to it we just need a little more experience throughout the lineup. As you can imagine it is frustrating to have to wait and grow and learn from life experiences before we can really be a great team; but that is where we are right now and we can only take one day at a time. The good news is based on talent we are in a great starting place. Lauren (McCall) and Jordan (Strickland) both broke the doubles record for wins in a season today and to do so as freshmen is really a great achievement of which they should be very proud of."WCU won the doubles points but the Terriers rattled off five singles victories to capture the match.
The loss drops WCU's record to 0-5 in conference action including 11-10 mark overall. The Terriers improved to 11-10 overall and are now 1-4 in SoCon play.
McCall and Strickland started things off for the Catamounts as they won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Junior Elizabeth Ansari and freshman Madison Riley teamed up to clinch the doubles point for WCU as they took the No. 3 match 6-3. Sophomores Savannah Taranto and Alexa Webb fell in a close 7-5 match at No. 1.
The Terrier tied the match at one with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. The Terriers took their first lead of the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6. The lead would jump to 3-1 as the Terriers took the No. 1 match 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Wofford clinched the match at No. 4 as the Terriers won 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
The Terriers would add to their lead at No. 5 as they won 6-4, 7-6 (3).
WCU lone singles victory came at No. 3 as Webb downed Kalli Karas 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a come-from-behind effort. The victory gave Webb her 14th singles victory of the season which tied her for third on the WCU single season list with teammate Madison Riley. The pair have four regular season matches and at least one SoCon Championship match to capture two more singles victories to tie the program record currently held by Stacia Kissell who won 16 matches in a season twice.
The Catamounts will not have much time to rest as they welcome in Samford for another SoCon match tomorrow morning at 11 am.
