Catamounts Topple Chattanooga in Saturday Matinee

Cullowhee, N.C. – Senior Emma Tynan served for six straight points in the decisive fourth set as Western Carolina claimed a 3-1 win over Chattanooga in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon inside the Ramsey Center. The Catamounts won by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 and 25-18.

Western Carolina improves to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in the league while Chattanooga drops to 8-13 and 4-4.

Reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week Abigail Veit led the Catamounts with 16 kills and 16 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. MaKenzie White recorded 11 kills to finish in double figures for the fifth time this season. Meagan Sanchez had a match-high 24 digs, followed by Merry Gebel with a career-high 23 and Caroline Perret with a season-high 18. Sydney Carlson dished out 23 assists.

Dani Szczepanski led the Mocs with 14 kills, followed by Mikaela Gauthreaux with 11 and Gylian Finch with 10. Megan Kaufman had a team-best 222 digs. Szczepanski had a team-best two solo blocks. Jaquelyn Langhaim had a match-high 32 assists.

After a tightly contested beginning of the first set, Western Carolina pulled ahead 19-14 following a Chattanooga serving error. The Mocs pulled within two, 21-19 before Western Carolina scored three of the next four points as the stanza ended on a Veit kill.

Chattanooga took a 19-11 lead in the second set thanks to a Western Carolina error. The Catamounts would get no closer than four sets for the remainder of the set.

Trailing 20-15 in the third set, the Catamounts rallied to even the set at 21 following a Chattanooga attack error. After a Langhaim kill gave the Mocs a 23-22 edge, the Catamounts closed out the set on a 3-0 run thanks to kills by White and Veit and an attack error for a 2-1 lead.

After a Veit kill tied the fourth set at 12, the Catamounts scored six consecutive points with Tynan serving for an 18-12 lead following an Aleah Keaton kill. Chattanooga pulled to within three, 18-15 on a Langhaim service ace, before a 5-1 Catamount run gave the hosts a 23-15 edge. A Gauthreaux attack error ended the match.

Western Carolina travels to ETSU on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
