Gebel, Veit Lead Catamounts Past Wofford

Cullowhee, N.C.Merry Gebel and Abigail Veit both finished with 16 kills as Western Carolina defeated Wofford 3-1 in Southern Conference action on Saturday evening at the Ramsey Center. The Catamounts won by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-19.

Western Carolina improves to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in league play with their third straight win while Wofford drops to 9-10 and 2-4.

Gebel's 16 kills tied a season-high and mark the fifth straight game that she has finished in double figures in kills. Veit's 16 kills are a season-high and her match-best 21 digs are a new career high as she finished with her second straight double-double and third of the season. Hannah Price tallied a team-best 20 assists, closely followed by Sydney Carlson with 19. Carlson had a match-high three service aces.

Colleen Reilly led the Terriers with 14 kills, followed by Catie Cronister with 13 and Riley Coonan with 10. Taylor Gill paced the Terriers with 19 digs. Lorissa King dished out a match-best 27 assists.

The Catamounts opened the first set on a 12-3 run before Wofford pulled to within four, 20-16. Western Carolina responded with three of the next four points and clinched the set on a Wofford attack error.

With Wofford leading the second set 22-20, a Veit kill sparked a 3-0 run for a 23-22 Catamount lead. After a Cronister kill tied the set, a Gebel kill gave Western Carolina set point before a Wofford error ended the stanza.

A Reilly kill broke a 13-13 tie in the third set as Wofford outscored the Catamounts 12-6 in the remainder of the frame to force a fourth set.

Leading 14-13, a Veit kill opened a 9-4 run as the Catamounts led 23-17 following a Gebel service ace. The Terriers pulled within five, 23-19, thanks to a Cronister kill before the set ended on an attack error and an Aleah Keaton block.

Western Carolina remains at home next weekend, hosting Samford on Friday at 6 p.m. and Chattanooga on Saturday at Noon.
