Terriers Fend Off Catamounts

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match 3-1 at Wofford on Friday evening at Richardson Indoor Stadium. Wofford won the match by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-11 and 25-17.

Wofford improves to 14-12 overall and 7-6 in the Southern Conference while Western Carolina drops to 12-12 and 6-7.

Merry Gebel led the Catamount offense with 10 kills. Meagan Sanchez had a team-best 21 digs, followed by Caroline Perret with 13 and Abigail Veit with 11. Aleah Keaton tallied three solo blocks. Sydney Carlson dished out 23 of WCU's 28 assists and had two service aces along with Sanchez.

Catie Cronister tallied a double-double as she led the Terriers with 10 kills and was credited with 12 digs. Colleen Reilly also finished in double figures with 10 kills. Taylor Gill recorded 19 digs to lead the team. Noa Miller led Wofford with three service aces.

The opening set had seven lead changes and 12 tie scores. A Reilly kill broke a 17-17 deadlock in the first set as the Terriers led 19-17 after a WCU error. The Catamounts drew within a point on three occasions but were unable to even the set as a pair of attack errors closed out the frame.

A Carlson service ace capped a 5-0 run as the Catamounts enjoyed a 9-6 lead in the second set. After Wofford pulled within a point, 15-14, a Keaton kill opened a 3-0 run for the visitors to lead 18-14. Much like Western Carolina did in the opening set, Wofford pulled within a point on four occasions down the stretch before the set concluded on a pair of attack errors as the Catamounts evened the match.

Wofford opened the third set on a 5-1 run and led 15-9 following an attack error. Western Carolina would get no closer for the rest of the set.

With Wofford leading 11-8 in the fourth set, Western Carolina tallied seven of the next eight points for a 15-12 lead. The Terriers responded with nine straight points for a 22-16 lead. A block by Lauren Miller concluded the match.

Western Carolina travels to Furman on Saturday for a 7 p.m. first serve.
