For the second-straight match the Western Carolina women’s tennis team came up just short of victory falling 4-3 at home to Presbyterian College. Down 3-0, the Catamounts nearly pulled off the comeback effort but the Blue Hose had just enough to hold off the young Catamount squad. Sophomore Jordan Strickland continued her strong season as she remained undefeated on the year with a comeback effort of her own in the No. 2 singles match. The Cary, N.C., product rallied after dropping the opening set 6-3 to earn back-to-back set wins at 6-3 and 6-4, respectively, to pick up her fifth solo win of the season.
The Catamounts fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point. PC took wins at No. 2 and No. 3 while the Catamounts won at the top. Strickland and junior Savannah Taranto teamed up to pick up a 6-2 victory at No. 1, their third-straight doubles win of the season together.
The Blue Hose quickly jumped ahead 2-0 with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. The third point of the match came at No. 6 as freshman Carli Deehr put up a late fight but fell 6-2, 7-5. The setback was the first of her collegiate career in a dual match.
With the Catamounts facing defeat Strickland rallied to win her match at No. 2 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to earn WCU’s first point of the match, 3-1. Sophomore Lauren McCall continued the rally with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 4. The victory was McCall’s fourth of the season.
The match came down to No. 5 and No. 1 singles. Both matches went three sets with PC clinching the match at No. 5 claiming a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 come-from-behind victory. Freshman Jordyn King picked up the win at No. 1 following the clinching match. She survived a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) third-set tiebreak to pick up the victory.
The Catamounts will complete their three-match homestand this Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 pm as they host the USC Upstate Spartans in nonconference action.
