BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Western Carolina women's tennis earned its second straight victory with a 4-3 win at Gardner-Webb Wednesday.

The Catamount victory pushes the team to 9-5 on the year. It was the second straight match Western Carolina has held on to grasp the victory and the third win in the last four matches for WCU.

"Today was another battle and it came down to the last couple of singles matches," said Associate Head Coach Jacob Eddins. "The players did a great job stepping up at the crucial moments and I think we have learned a lot from our past matches this season about how to play our best in key moments."

Western Carolina set the tone early picking up the doubles point winning two of three. The Catamounts got wins at number two and number three doubles to earn the first point of the match. Jordyn King and Lauren McCall got it started in doubles for WCU with a 6-1 win and No. 2 doubles. The Catamount tandem of Carli Deehr and Caitlin Ward sealed the deal with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Deehr and Jordan Strickland kept things rolling for WCU giving the Catamounts a 3-0 lead. Deehr won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles for a 2-0 lead and it was pushed to 3-0 with Strickland's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Gardner-Webb pulled within one with wins at No. 5 and No. 4 singles to make the score 3-2. It all came down to number one and number three singles. After Catamounts' King won the first set 6-4 and battled through to earn the second set 7-6 (7-1) to seal the match for the Catamounts.

Western Carolina returns to action Friday heading back into Southern Conference play traveling to Birmingham, Ala. for a high noon meeting with Samford.

"I am really proud of the way we are competing and look forward to getting back to conference play at Samford on Friday," Eddins added.
