Box Score

April 8, 2018

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina baseball dropped both ends of Sunday's series-completing doubleheader to UNCG, falling in game one, 3-2, before dropping the finale, 5-3, at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

Both teams finished with 15 hits between the two games, though the Spartans had four extra-base knocks against two for the Catamounts. UNCG struck out 16 times with WCU retired on strikes 13 times.

Two Catamounts posted three-hit games in Sunday's twin bill with a combined three hitters recording three hits on the day. Andrew Robinson finished 3-for-4 in game one before reaching twice in the second game with a pair of walks, while Justin Sparks had a 3-for-3 day in game two, walking once in the opener. Between the two games, senior Caleb Robinson finished 3-for-7 with a double, driving in two with a run scored.

WCU senior Cameron Blaquiere doubled in game one on Sunday afternoon to extend his hitting streak to a career-long 13-straight games, but he saw the streak end in the finale, finishing 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and RBI.

For UNCG, Andrew Moritz finished 3-for-8 with a triple and two RBI on Sunday with three other players collecting two hits apiece.

Western Carolina steps out of conference on Wednesday night, hosting nationally-ranked Kentucky at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with fans able to watch the game online at ESPN3.com or through the WatchESPN app.

Game One Recap: UNCG 3, Western Carolina 2
An unearned, first-inning run proved to be the difference as UNCG claimed the series by taking game one of Sunday's doubleheader, 3-2. WCU managed to out-hit the potent Spartans 9-to-7 collectively on the day but could never find the timely hit through the latter stages of the game to score the victory.

Austin Embler dribbled a single to the third base side, beating the throw to first before taking second base as the errant throw allowed him to advance. A sacrifice bunt pushed him around to third where he eventually scored on a single by Dillon Stewart to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

In the home half of the second, a two-out Catamount rally pushed WCU in front. Spencer Holcomb reached on an infield single to spark the offense with Kitt Capell drawing a seven-pitch walk to put to aboard ahead of Caleb Robinson. The eldest Robinson brother doubled to right center, pushing Holcomb across with Capell hustling around from first to give WCU a 2-1 lead after two.

UNCG pulled ahead for good in the fourth inning, though, matching WCU's two-spot from the second coming on a Ryan Caveness bases loaded two-RBI single.

Western Carolina managed to put its first two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to find the equalizing marker. Luke Robinson drew a lead-off walk in the sixth before Justice Bigbie single through the right side, but three-consecutive fielder's choice putouts ended the threat stranding two runners on including Bigbie at third base. In the seventh, consecutive singles by Caleb and Andrew Robinson, the latter on a push bunt to the right side that alluded the Spartan defense, gave WCU another golden opportunity. However, a strikeout and double-play groundout thwarted the rally.

All told, the Catamounts left a combined eight runners on base in the loss.

WCU starter Tristan Baker (1-4) was again solid on the mound for the Catamounts, scattering six hits over seven innings with three runs --two unearned -- allowed. The Charlotte, N.C., native struck out six with just one walk issued. Freshman reliever Zach Franklin tossed two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three with just one hit allowed.

For the Spartans, Bryce Hensley (3-1) picked up the victory by working around six hits and three walks allowed, striking out five with two earned runs allowed. Reliever Andrew Wantz scored his seventh save of the year with three innings of three-hit, scoreless work, striking out four against one walk issued.

All seven of UNCG's hits were scattered between seven different players with Caveness and Stewart credited with RBI.

Game Two Recap: UNCG 5, Western Carolina 3
UNCG rallied from Western Carolina's early lead to complete the doubleheader and series sweep, holding off the Catamounts for the 5-3 victory at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

WCU's offense was limited to six singles while four of UNCG's eight hits went for extra bases in the series finale. But despite the void of offense, the Catamounts were in the mix through the final frame.

A one-out walk by Andrew Robison ignited a two-run, first-inning rally for the Catamounts as Justice Bigbie singled up the middle allowing Robinson to hustle around to third base where he later scored on a wild pitch. With Bigbie on third after another wild pitch, Cameron Blaquiere lifted a run-scoring, sacrifice fly to left field to give WCU the first inning edge for the second time in the series.

However, scoring in threes proved to be the difference-maker for the Spartans on the weekend. With two men on and two outs in the top of the third, Andrew Moritz drove a triple to deep center field to drive in two. The relay throw back in to third base skipped past the cutoff and bounced into the WCU dugout, allowing Moritz to trot home on the error in giving UNCG the 3-2 lead.

UNCG tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth on a Ryan Clinch solo home run and again in the eighth inning on a sacrifice squeeze bunt to plate Moritz in giving the Spartans a 5-2 lead. WCU looked to rally in the home half of the eighth, pushing across a two-out run as Caleb Robinson singled and later scored on the RBI base knock by Justin Sparks in providing the final tally.

As luck would have it, in the ninth inning, a lead-off single by Will Prater turned into a double-play as Andrew Robinson reached on a would-be fielder's choice at second but was called out in runner's interference as the would-be throw to first deflected off Prater's helmet. UNCG recorded a strikeout to end the fame and the game with the two-run victory.

Bigbie (1-for-5) collected one hit to push his active hitting streak to eight-straight for WCU.

Redshirt junior LHP Taylor Purus (1-7) struck out seven over seven innings of work in suffering the loss on the mound for the Catamounts. The Hudson, N.C., native pitched around three walks, allowing four runs -- three of which were earned -- on six hits. Blake Therrian tossed the final two innings, surrendering a run on two hits out of the bullpen.

After starter Jake Lewis was chased in the second inning, reliever Easton Welch (3-1) picked-up the victory for the Spartans, striking out two through 3.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless action. Lewis was charged with two runs on just one hit but issued six walks. Jake Maynard made his second appearance of the weekend, scoring his fifth save of the year by tossing three innings of one-run relief, scattering three hits and a walk.
