Morehead, Ky. - Despite efforts made by both teams to play Wednesday afternoon's backend of a nonconference home-and-home between Western Carolina and Morehead State, weather delays followed by showers that turned into torrential downpours have forced the cancellation of the midweek game.
WCU took the first meeting between the Catamount and Eagles in Cullowhee back in late February, 6-2, in Cullowhee with Wednesday's game set to conclude the two-game seasonal set. It was scheduled to be WCU's first series game in Morehead, Ky., since the first-ever meeting back in 1996.
Originally slated for a 4:00 pm start time, both teams cut pregame short to attempt to throw first pitch at 3:40 pm. However, just before the teams took the field for pregame festivities, a lightning delay chased both teams from the playing surface and fans from the stands. After a delay just over an hour, a 5:00 pm start time was anticipated but again pushed back. It was then that rain showers started to pepper the ball park and were eventually followed by heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
During the delay, both teams were treated to an impromptu game of "name that tune" hosted by Jim Tom Trent, the Mayor of Morehead, Ky., over the stadium speakers. The back-and-forth team competition was ultimately halted with the scoreboard reading 8-8 as the two head coaches exchanged handshakes signifying the cancellation of the baseball game.
Western Carolina next travels to McNair Field in Forest City, N.C., home of the Coastal Plain League Forest City Owls to face the VCU Rams out of the Atlantic-10. WCU is 2-1 against VCU all-time, winning the first-ever meeting, 11-6, back in 1997 and splitting two meetings in the 2003 NCAA Regional in Wilson, N.C. Game times are 7:00 pm on Friday and 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon. For tickets, visit ForestCityBaseball.com or call (828) 245-0000.
