Kiawah Island, N.C. – Sophomore Tumi Kúld fired an opening-round, even-par 72 on Sunday to sit amongst a tie with 17 other golfers in 16th-place after one of three rounds at the fall-concluding Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point. Kúld paced the Catamounts into a three-way tie for 13th, just two strokes outside the overall tournament top 10 with two rounds to play at the par-72, 6,911-yard Turtle Point Golf Course.
The event's second round gets underway on Monday morning with tee times off both the first and 10th holes beginning at 7:30 am. Paired with golfers from Appalachian State, Memphis, and Radford, WCU's scoring five will tee-off in foursomes on the back nine between 8:20 – 9:00 am. Opening on the back nine, Kúld had a pair of bogeys with one birdie through his first nine holes, making the turn to the front at 1-over for the round. Birdies on a pair of par-5 holes – the 523-yard second and the 533-yard fifth – left him at 1-under par with four holes remaining. A third bogey for the Akureyri, Iceland, native in his first round on the par-3 seventh left him at even-par for the day.
Freshman Pierre Viallaneix is tied for 45th following a first-round 2-over par 74 on Sunday. The Apopka, Fla., product recovered from an up-and-down opening nine holes that included two bogeys and a double-bogey countered by two birdies to turn to the front nine at 2-over. Including the par-4 ninth, Viallaneix carded par on 10-consecutive holes to end the day.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Bussert countered four bogeys and a double-bogey with a pair of birdies for the 4-over, 76, sitting in a tie for 65th while freshman Magnus Pedersen also charted two birdies against five bogeys and a double in a tie for 74th with a 5-over par round of 77. Rounding out WCU's scoring five is junior Zach Caudill in a tie for 96th overall at 7-over, 79. Caudill, too, carded a pair of birdies for WCU on Sunday.
No. 24 Auburn leads the 21-team field by nine strokes over second-place Augusta, 274-to-283, after the opening 18 holes. High Point sits in third after shooting even-par, 288, on Sunday with the College of Charleston (290) and Gardner-Webb (291) rounding out the top five teams.
Auburn has three of the top five individuals after 18 holes with Jovan Rebula leading the 121-golfer field with an 8-under par 64. Wells Padgett, playing unattached as an individual for Auburn, is in the runner-up spot with a 6-under par, 66.
