CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Sophomore Jewel Smalls scored 23 points as Western Carolina women's basketball's comeback fell short as the Catamounts fell to visiting Winthrop 63-60 Saturday in the Ramsey Center.

Turning Point:
After Western Carolina built a 22-9 first-quarter lead, Winthrop went on to outscore the Catamounts 21-6 in the second quarter and held WCU without a field goal for over 10 minutes spanning the middle of the second and third quarter. WCU attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter outscoring the Eagles 25-13 but a game-tying three-point attempt by Smalls fell short as time expired in the game to halt the frenzy of a heroic chance to knot the game.
