Strickland Win Moves Her up Record Books in Loss

BOONE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis fell to Appalachian State 6-1 Sunday at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.

TURNING POINT:

Appalachian State got off to an early 1-0 start by sweeping the doubles point and sealed the match with wins at No. 3, No. 2 and No. four singles to make the final matches inconsequential.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Catamounts avoided a sweep by the Mountaineers thanks to junior Jordan Strickland who picked up a three-set victory at No. 1 singles. She dropped the first set 2-6 against Teodora Sevo before battling back to take sets two and three 6-2, 6-4 for the win.
  • Strickland's victory marks her 26th career win ranking her tied for fourth in the Western Carolina women's tennis record books for wins in a career. She needs two wins to move into third place.
  • Western Carolina pushed one more match to three sets before falling at No. 6 singles. Freshman Julia Pezzuco went three sets dropping set one 4-6, bouncing back to take set two 6-4 and falling in set three 1-0 (23-21) in a shorted final set.

Western Carolina returns to action Saturday traveling to Wake Forest for a 3:30 p.m. match.
