CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis won its home opener Saturday defeating visiting Gardner-Webb 5-2 at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
TURNING POINT:
The Catamounts swept doubles to go up 1-0 early and went on to take four of the six singles matches for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- After sweeping the doubles handily the Catamounts went to work individually.
- Lauren McCall put WCU up 2-0 early taking a win at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-4.
- Junior Jordan Strickland clinched the match at No. 1 singles in a three-set battle. After dropping the first set, she fought back to take the final two sets 7-5, 6-3.
NOTES:
- Jacy Smith closed out the match picking up a win at No. 2 singles. She improves to 5-3 on the season.
- Strickland now has 28 career wins and sits in third place for most wins in the WCU record books. She needs three wins to move into second place.

Western Carolina will host South Carolina State at 2 p.m. Monday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
