Three Score in Double Figures in Tough Loss to ETSU

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball dropped a tough one Saturday falling to visiting ETSU 62-57 in the Ramsey Center. 
 
Turning Point:
Sophomore Jewel Smalls hit a jump shot with 2:33 to give Western Carolina a 54-53 lead over the Buccaneers but ETSU answered shortly after with a shot inside the paint by Tijuana Kimbro for the lead – sparking a 4-0 run by the Bucs. The Lady Catamounts had a chance in the final 25 seconds when Alyssa Walker hit a monster three-pointer to pull within one, 58-57. ETSU was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the last 13 seconds to seal the game. 
 
Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant led the Catamounts with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, and recording four rebounds. 
  • Tembre Moates, a redshirt junior, and rookie Walker each had 10 points.
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls just missed a double-double with eight points and a game-leading 15 rebounds. 
  • ETSU's Kaia Upton led all scorers with 17 points. 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • In the fourth quarter, there were four lead changes with one tie. ETSU had a 5-0 run in the final 10 minutes while the Lady Catamounts had a 4-0 run. ETSU held the lead for 8:40 in the fourth.
  • Western Carolina connected on six three-pointers while giving up five to ETSU.
  • The Catamounts ripped down 40 rebounds and held ETSU to 35.
  • Each team shot in the mid-30s from the field with WCU at 36.1 percent and ETSU 35.1.
  • Western Carolina had 17 turnovers in the game equating to 14 points for ETSU. 
  • The Catamounts got 28 points inside the paint and ETSU earned 26. 
  • All told, there were 16 lead changes in the game and 10 ties. 
 
News & Notes
  • LaPlant has scored in double figures in the last four games and nine of the last 11 games. She is averaging 13.3 points in that 11-game span and has hit 34 three-pointers. 
  • The Catamounts have scored 50 or more points in the last nine games. 
  • Smalls clocked in her third straight game without scoring in double figures but she did get back on the double-figure rebounding train. She pulled down 15 rebounds against ETSU the third-most for her this season. 
  • For the season, Smalls had 185 rebounds on the year – the most by a Catamount since the 2017-18 season when former player Sherae Bonner had 211 on the year. 
  • Moates is quietly having a strong season scoring in double figures in five of the last eight games. 
  • Western Carolina has hit six or more three-pointers in the last five games and at least on three-pointerr in all 17 games. 
  • LaPlant has hit at least one three-pointer in all 17 games have hit 43 on the season – a new season-best for the Asheboro, N.C. native. 
  • In the first two games of SoCon play, LaPlant is averaging 14.5 points per game and shooting 37 percent from the field.

Western Carolina will not return to the hardwood for seven days when the Lady Catamounts travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on UNCG at 4 p.m. in WCU's first conference road game of the season.
