Women's Tennis Opens 2020 Season at Belmont Saturday

Catamounts face Belmont and Tennessee State over weekend

CULLOWHEE, N. C. – Western Carolina women's tennis opens the 2020 season this weekend traveling to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Belmont Saturday and Tennessee State Sunday.

The Catamounts will face Belmont at 4 p.m. Saturday and Tennessee State at 11 a.m. Sunday.

"We are very excited to kick-off our dual match season in Nashville against two tough opponents," said head women's tennis coach Bret Beaver. "We set a great foundation with the hard work we put in last year's fall and spring; we will use that as a springboard for this spring."

The Catamounts return six players from the 2018-19 season. Western Carolina ended the campaign with 12 wins – just one shy of tying the school record for most wins in a season.

Western Carolina had three players with double-digit wins in singles duel play. In her freshman campaign Jacy Smith recorded 16 wins, Julia Pezzuco had 13 and Jordan Strickland ended with 11. In doubles play, Strickland had 13 wins with former Catamount Savannah Taranto while Smith and Pezzoco ended with 12.

After Western Carolina's sojourn through Tennessee, the Catamounts will return to the state of North Carolina to travel to Gardner-Webb to take on the Runnin' Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Sat. Feb. 1
