Short-handed Catamounts battle Tigers

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Western Carolina women's tennis was edged by Tennessee State Sunday dropping a 4-3 match to the Tigers at the Hadley Park Tennis Center.
 
The Catamounts were competing without two of its players and had to forfeit a No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. 
 
TURNING POINT:
Tennessee State got the early 1-0 lead with a sweep of doubles – including the forfeit by the Catamounts at No. 3 doubles. The Tigers secured the win with winning three of the five singles matches with a second forfeit by the Catamounts at No. 6 singles.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Carolina got big singles wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to get three key wins.
  • The match was sealed by Tennessee State getting wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
  • Catamount sophomore Jacy Smith moved to No. 1 singles against the Tigers dropping a three-set match. Smith won the first set 6-2 but dropped the ensuing sets 6-0. 6-2.
 
NOTES:
  • Senior Jordan Strickland earned her 37th career win at No. 2 singles Sunday against the Tigers.
  • Smith is making her mark on the career singles record in the WCU record books with her 17 career wins, in a total of 22 matches at Western Carolina, ranks 17th.

Western Carolina will travel to Gardner-Webb Sat. Feb. 1 for a 2 p.m. match.
