Catamounts Drop Season-Opener at UNCA 70-59

Two score in double figures in loss for WCU

 ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Newcomers Nadia Marshall (14) and Kyla Allison (12) each scored in double figures Western Carolina women's basketball dropped its opening game of the 2020-21 season at UNC Asheville 70-59 Wednesday in Kimmel Arena. 
 
 Turning Point:
 Twice Western Carolina cut UNCA lead to two points in the second quarter and slimmed it down to six in the four quarter, but the Bulldogs always had an answer including turning a five-point 48-43 lead, in the fourth quarter, into 11 with back-to-back three-pointers. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt sophomore Marshall made her Catamount debut leading WCU with 14 points in the game. 
  • Redshirt junior Allison scored 12 points in the game and pulled down five rebounds. 
  • Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 20 points. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina hit only two three-pointers in the game while UNCA connected on five including two crucial treys in the fourth quarter. 
  • The Bulldogs shot a scorching 50 percent from the field in the game and held the Catamounts to 38 percent. 
  • The Catamounts won the third quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 13-11. 
  • Western Carolina found some success in the paint scoring 35 points. 
  • UNCA outrebounded WCU 32 to 25 including 23 on the defensive end. 
  • Western Carolina was 15-of-24 from the free-throw line. 
  • Eight of the 10 Catamounts who saw action on the court scored for WCU. 
  • Western Carolina scored in double figures in all four quarters with a quarter-high 17 points in the fourth.
 News & Notes
  • Lauren LaPlant's three-pointer in the first quarter pushes her consecutive games hitting a three-pointer to 31-straight dating back to the 2019-20 season. 
  • The Catamounts loss to the Bulldogs is the third-straight to UNCA in the series. WCU continues to lead the series overall 40-17.
  • Allison's 12 points against UNCA is the most she has scored in a game since pouring in 24 points against UNCA, almost three years to the date Nov. 26, 2017, while she was playing for Middle Tennessee. 
  • Head Coach Kiley Hill is still searching for his 300th career win. 
  • The loss to UNCA is Western Carolina's seventh consecutive loss dating back to the 2019-20 season. The Catamounts' last win came on Feb. 8, 2010, with a 61-53 victory at Chattanooga. 
  • LaPlant's three-pointer in the game pushes her career total to 132 maintaining her spot of sixth place in the WCU record books. She needs 14 three-pointers to move into fifth place.

 Western Carolina hits the road traveling to Durham, N.C. Sunday to take on Duke at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
