Catamounts Furious Comeback Against Elon Falls Short

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball's comeback against Elon came up short Saturday in the Ramsey Center as the Catamounts' flurried battle ended in a 69-54 loss to the Phoenix. 
 
The Catamounts overcame a 28-7 first-quarter deficit to roar back against Elon in the ensuing final three quarters. Western Carolina, after being down by double digits most of the game, had a chance to cut to single digits with five minutes left, 58-48, but couldn't convert the shot. 
 
Turning Point:
Elon roared into the first quarter outscoring Western Carolina 28-7 aided by going 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Freshman Zanoria Cruz paced the Catamounts with a career-high 15 points hitting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line. 
  • Redshirt senior Tembre Moates just missed her second-consecutive double-double with 12 rebounds and eight points. 
  • Nadia Marshall was one point shy of a double-digit scoring performance with nine points.
  • Elon's Ariel Colon's 15 points paced four Phoenix in double figures. 
  Inside the Box Score
  • After giving up 28 points to Elon in the first quarter, Western Carolina held the Phoenix to eight points in the second quarter outscoring Elon 12-8.
  • Western Carolina outscored Elon in two of the final three quarters.
  • The Catamounts battled through 23 turnovers in the game equating to 17 Elon points. 
  • Western Carolina crashed the glass ripping down a season-best 44 rebounds. 
  • The Catamounts hit five three-pointers in the game and Elon had nine – six of their nine in the first quarter. 
  • After Elon shot 60 percent from the field in the first quarter, Western Carolina held the Phoenix to 14.2 percent in the second. Overall, WCU shot 30.4 percent from the field while Elon shot 39. 
 
 
 News & Notes
  • It took until the 33 seconds left in the third quarter but Lauren LaPlant kept her consecutive games with at least one three-point to 33-straight – dating back to last season. 
  • For the second-straight game, Moates ripped down a career-high in rebounds with 12 against Elon.
  • Cruz is the first Catamount freshman on the season to score in double figures with 15 against the Phoenix.  
  • With the late addition of Newberry to the schedule, Western Carolina assures itself back-to-back home games before hitting the road for four consecutive games away from the Ramsey Center. 
  • Head Coach Kiley Hill is one win shy of his 300th career win. 
  • LaPlant's three-pointer in the game pushes her career total to 135 maintaining her spot of sixth place in the WCU record books. She needs 11 three-pointers to move into fifth place.
