Catamounts Battle Furman in Loss to Paladins

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball battled the visiting Furman Paladins before falling 69-59 Thursday in the Ramsey Center. 
 
Turning Point:
The Catamounts went toe-to-toe with Furman in the first half tying the game at 30 before the Paladin's Le'Jzae Davidson hit a bucket before the half to put them up 32-30. Furman took that little bump in the game to outscore the Catamounts 23-14 in the third quarter and build a lead WCU couldn't overcome. 
 
Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant scored a game-leading 23 points – the second time this season she has scored 20 or more points in a game.
  • Rookie Mia Littlejohn came off the bench in the second quarter to give WCU a lift scoring seven points in that period. She ended the game with a career-high nine points. 
  • Redshirt junior Tembre Moates turned in a performance of eight points and eight rebounds. 
  •  Davidson leads the Paladins with 18 points.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Each team hit five three-pointers in the game.
  • Furman outrebounded the Catamounts by 10, 36 to 26. Thirteen of Furman's rebounds were on the defensive end. On the flip side, WCU had 20 defensive boards. 
  • Both were scorching on the court each shooting 47 percent. 
  • The lead changed twice with Western Carolina's last lead at 15-13 in the first quarter.
  • Western Carolina led for under five minutes in the game. 
  • For the second time, this season Western Carolina had a season-low 11 turnovers in the game. 
  • Western Carolina won the fourth quarter outscoring Furman 15 to 14. 
  • Furman scored 38 points in the paint. 
  • The Paladin bench scored 41 of its 69 points. 
 
News & Notes
  • LaPlant added to her career record for most three-pointers in a season with a pair against Furman. She now has 71 on the season. 
  • Littlejohn connected on a career-best three field goals in the game. She also tied her career mark hitting one three-pointer in the game. 
  • With a trio of three-pointers against Furman. LaPlant moves into seventh place in the WCU record books for most three-pointers in a career with 122. She needs four to move into sixth place.
  • As a team, the Catamounts have hit 180 three-pointers on the season. The 2019-20 squad needs 10 three-pointers before the end of the season to take over first place. 
  • LaPlant has scored in double figures in five consecutive games and 16 of the last 18 contests. 
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls has scored 320 points on the season just 10 points shy of tying her seasonal output from her senior campaign. 
  • There have been a Catamount player score 20 or more points six times this season. 
 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina will host its final SoCon home game of the season in a doubleheader with men's basketball set to tip-off at 5 p.m. Saturday. It is also Senior Day and Judith Martin Ruiz and Farasia Hodge will be honored prior to the game.
