Tennis Falls to South Carolina State

Travels to UNCG Saturday

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis dropped its match at South Carolina State 4-0 Sunday at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center.

The duo of senior Jordan Strickland and sophomore Jacy Smith picked up a win at No. 1 singles 6-2 to open the match. South Carolina State won at No. 2 doubles and the Catamounts had to forfeit No. 3 doubles giving the Bulldogs the win.

Western Carolina is still working through injuries and continues to be shorthanded.

Playing down one, with South Carolna State's doubles win, the Catamounts continued to battle. Although the Bulldogs went on to pick up wins at No. 3, 5 and 6 to earn the 4-0 victory that doesn't take away the Catamount matches that were listed as unfinished.

Each Catamount in No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles had earned set wins before the match was halted. Smith at No. 1 singles was up 6-1, 4-2 while senior Strickland was 6-4, 4-2. Senior Lauren McCall was working on a split after winning the first set 6-2 and was down in the second 3-2.

Strickland's win at doubles gives her 41 doubles wins in duel play. She is tied with former Catamount Savannah Taranto for the top spot in the record books for most doubles wins. Strickland needs one win at doubles to own both the doubles and singles records for wins in a career as a Catamounts.

The Catamounts travel to UNCG Saturday for a Southern Conference match set to begin at 1 p.m.
