WCU returns to Bulldog Classic for day two Saturday

The Basics 
Score: Eastern Illinois 6, Western Carolina 2; Boston College 3, Western Carolina 1

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina dropped a pair of games on the first day of the Bulldog Classic, hosted by No. 14 Georgia, falling to Eastern Illinois 6-2 and dropping the second game to Boston College 3-1.

Turning Point 
Tied 2-2, after two innings, Eastern Illinois went on to score four unanswered runs. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Eastern Illinois jumped on the board first scoring a run throughout the first two innings.
  • Western Carolina knotted the game up with one swing. Kayla Brewer reached first on an EIU error with one out. With two outs, Myra Twitty singled to right field moving Brewer to second. Sophomore Lindsay Perillo hit a two-RBI double to right-center scoring Brewer and Twitty and was called out at third during the play.
  • Eastern Illinois took the lead thanks to a two-run home run in the fifth and padded the lead with an RBI double in the sixth and a solo home run in the seventh.
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Jayme Eilers got her second start of the season going five innings giving up five runs on 12 hits and struck out nine. She falls to 1-1 on the season.
  • Brewer replaced Eilers tossing 1.2 innings giving up one run on two hits and struck out two.
  • Senior pitcher Kinsey Liscio came into the game with two outs in the top of the seventh forcing a groundout to third base to end the inning. 
  • Eastern Illinois had 15 hits in the game while Western Carolina had three.
  • Perillo led the Catamounts with a double and two RBI. Brewer and Twitty also had hits.

Turning Point 
Just like earlier in the day, against Eastern Illinois, Western Carolina was tied with Boston College 1-1 before the Eagles scored the go-ahead two-run home run to break the tie and secure the win. The Eagles scored three unanswered runs over the last two innings of the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth inning when rookie Samantha Reele hit a lead-off solo home run to right-center field.
  • Boston College tied the game with a solo home run of its own in the top of the sixth.
  • The Eagles took the lead from a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Savannah Rice took her first loss of the season in her second start. She went six innings allowing three runs on seven hits. All three runs were scored off homeruns. She falls to 1-1 on the season.
  • Brewer replaced Rice in the seventh inning. She got the Catamounts out of the inning getting three outs giving up one hit and forcing two flyouts. 
  • The Eagles ended the game with eight hits while WCU had four. 
  • Each team left six runners on.
  • Western Carolina committed two errors. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Eilers' nine strikeouts against Eastern Illinois was a career-high and a season-high for the team. She has notched a total of 16 strikeouts over her last two starts. 
  • Reele's home run was the first of her Catamount career. 
  • Western Carolina has hit 16 extra-base hits, nine doubles, and seven home runs, over the first six games of the season. 
  • Western Carolina is suffering through a three-game losing streak.
