Softball Drops Pair of Games at Bulldog Classic

The Basics 
Score: No. 14 Georgia 7, Western Carolina 2; Eastern Illinois 4, Western Carolina 2

ATHENS, Ga. – Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Bulldog Classic Saturday falling to host No. 14 Georgia 7-2 and dropping the nightcap to Eastern Illinois 4-2.

Turning Point 
After Western Carolina battled back from being down 2-0 to tie it up 2-2, the Bulldogs went on to score five unanswered runs. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Georgia jumped on the scoreboard first thanks to a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. 
  • Western Carolina got a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2. With one out, senior Erica Hayes singled up the middle. A Bulldog error allowed Bailey Huneycutt to reach first and Hayes move to second. A second straight Georgia error put another Catamount on board with Addie Pate reaching first and Hayes came in to score. Huneycutt eventually also scored on a Bulldog wild pitch.
  • The tie in the game was short-lived as Georgia scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. 
  • WCU had its chances in the game. At the top of the fourth, Ashlyn Long opened the inning with a double and got to third in a sacrifice bunt but was stranded on third. 
  • Huneycutt also picked up a double in the fifth but couldn't get around to score. 
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Senior pitcher Kinsey Liscio tossed the complete game going six innings giving up 11 hits, seven runs, five earned, two walks and one strikeout. She falls to 0-2 on the year.
  • The Catamounts had five hits in the game with two extra-base hits – two doubles. 
  • Long was 2-for-3 with a double. 
  • Each team left seven runners on base. 
  • Georgia had five extra-base hits – three doubles, a triple, and a home run.

Turning Point 
For the second straight game of the day, Western Carolina found itself tied 2-2 with an opponent and just like the earlier game with Georgia, Eastern Illinois broke the tie to take the lead and the game – scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Long got the Catamounts on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the second. 
  • Western Carolina took a 2-0 lead with a run in the top of the third. Myra Twitty opened the inning reaching on an EIU error. Pinch-runner Alexis Lankford replaced Twitty moving to second on a wild pitch. A second Panther error put Kylie Shay on base and Lankford moved to third. Bailey Huneycutt's sacrifice fly to left field scored Lankford.
  • Eastern Illinois tied the game in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs thanks to a home run and an RBI single.
  • The Panthers took the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs. 
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Savannah Rice made her third start of the season against EIU. She went four innings giving up four runs on seven hits striking out one. She falls to 1-2 on the season.
  • Kayla Brewer replaced Rice in the fifth inning with no outs. She went two innings giving up one hit. 
  • Western Carolina had four hits in the game while EIU had seven.
  • Long was 1-for-2 in the game with a home run.

News & Notes 
  • Long hit her first home run of the season.
  • In the four of five games played in the Bulldog Classic, Long and Huneycutt are hitting .333 with three hits. 
  • At the Bulldog Classic, Western Carolina is being outscored 12-1 in the final three innings of the four games played.
  • Shay is on a three-game hitting streak while Long has reached base safely in the last five games. 
 Up Next 
Western Carolina concludes play in the Bulldog Classic at 1 p.m. Sunday facing No. 14 Georgia for the second time in the tournament. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+.
