Catamounts Fall to No. 14 Georgia in Final Day of Bulldog Classic

Travels to tournament at Memphis next weekend

The Basics
Score: No. 14 Georgia 8, Western Carolina 0 (Five innings)
Records: Western Carolina 2-7
Location: Jack Turner Stadium, Athens, Ga.

ATHENS, Ga. – Western Carolina softball closed out play at the 11th Annual Bulldogs Classic falling to host No. 14 Georgia 8-0, in five innings, Sunday at Jack Turner Stadium.

Turning Point:
Georgia scored in three of the four innings played in the shortened game due to the NCAA Softball run rule in which if a team is up by eight runs after five innings the game is halted.

How it Happened:
  • Georgia opened the game by scoring a pair of runs courtesy of a pair of RBI singles and a Catamount error.
  • A second error by the Catamounts, with one out in the third, set up three runs by the Bulldogs. A single and then a two-RBI single and an RBI double plated the trio of runs.
  • The Bulldogs sealed the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to shorten the game to five innings.
  • Western Carolina had three base runners courtesy of walks.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Western Carolina was no-hit by the tandem of Georgia pitchers Mary Wilson Avant, who pitched four innings, and Amanda Ablan who closed out the game in the fifth inning.
  • Georgia had nine hits in the game scoring eight runs.
  • Three different Catamount pitchers saw action in the game. Freshman Jayme Eilers got the start and 2.1 innings giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits and struck out one. Eilers takes the loss and falls to 1-2 on the season.
  • In the third inning, with one out, Kayla Brewer replaced Eilers. Brewer closed out the third tossing 0.2 innings giving up two runs on one hit.
  • Rookie hurler Savannah Rice replaced Brewer with no outs in the fourth. She gave up a walk that would allow the runner to eventually score due to the Catamount's third error in the game. Her final line would read pitching one inning without allowing an earned run.
  • Ashlyn Long drew two walks and Addie Pate added a third to deny Avant and Ablan a combined perfect game.

News & Notes:
  • Western Carolina was no-hit for the second time this season in the loss to Georgia Sunday. The first was an 8-0 loss in the second game at Clemson on Feb. 12.
  • Long has reached base safely in the last six games.
  • The Catamounts are suffering through a six-game losing streak.

Up Next:
Western Carolina will compete in its second tournament of the season when the Catamounts travel to Memphis, Tenn. to compete in the University of Memphis Tournament March 6-8. The Catamounts will face Butler, Belmont, Youngstown State, Indiana State, and host Memphis.
