Softball Drops Pair of Games at Memphis Tournament

Huneycutt hits third home run of the season

The Basics 
Score: Butler 7, Western Carolina 1; Memphis 9, Western Carolina 1 (6)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Western Carolina softball dropped the first pair of games in day one of the U of M Tournament falling to Butler 7-1 in the opening game and closing out falling to host Memphis 9-1, in six innings, Friday at the Softball Complex in Memphis Tenn.

 Turning Point 
 Butler scored a run to open the game and went on to score three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • Butler jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. 
  • At the top of the fourth Butler tacked on three more runs off a three-run home run.
  • The Catamounts had a solid scoring chance in the fourth inning with back-to-back singles by Erica Hayes and Bailey Huneycutt to lead off the inning. The pair moved to second and third on a passed ball but a double play by Butler erased Hayes and Huneycutt.
  • In the sixth, Butler scored a pair of runs to lead 6-0.
  • At the bottom of the sixth Western Carolina avoided the shutout when Huneycutt hit a solo home run to center.
  • Butler closed out the game with a run in the seventh. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Jayme Eilers got the start tossing three innings giving up four runs on five hits and struck out five. She takes the loss falling to 1-3 on the year.
  • Kayla Brewer replaced Eilers completing the final four innings allowing three runs on six hits striking out three.
  • Butler ended the game with 11 hits while Western Carolina had six.
  • The Catamounts had three errors in the game.
  • Huneycutt led the club going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
 Memphis 8, Western Carolina 0
 Turning Point 
 Memphis scored in every inning and benefitted from a four-run inning second. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • Just like Butler in the morning game, Memphis jumped out early scoring a run in the first inning.
  • It was a monster inning for the Tigers in the second plating four runs.
  • The Tigers added a sixth run in the third inning. 
  • The Catamounts' best scoring chance came in the fourth inning all without a hit. Huneycutt drew a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Reele. Lindsay Perillo was hit by a pitch and the Catamounts had runners at second with one out. Back-to-back strikeouts by the Catamounts ended the inning. 
  • A two-run home run ends the bottom of the fourth extended Memphis' lead to 8-0 and shortened the game to five innings due to the run rule. 
  • Western Carolina's golden scoring chance came in the top of the fifth. After Erica Hayes singled up the middle, Kailey McNeil walked and Long reached on a Tigers' fielding error the Catamounts had base loaded. The Catamounts plated one run when Huneycutt reached on a Tiger error and Hayes scored. 
  • A lead-off triple by Memphis and a single to the wall gave the Tigers its ninth run of the game ending the contest without playing the seventh inning due to the run rule. 
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Senior Kinsey Liscio got the start and takes the loss. She tossed two innings giving up five runs on six hits. She falls to 0-3 on the year.
  • Freshman hurler Savanah Rice replaced Liscio with one out in the third inning. She closed out the game tossing 3.1 innings giving up four runs on six hits and struck out two. 
  • Hayes ended Memphis' no-hitter attempt with a single up the middle in the top of the fifth.
  • Memphis had 12 hits in the game compared to Western Carolina's two.
  • Hayes had a single and Addie Pate hit a double. 
  • The Catamounts left seven runners on base.
 News & Notes 
  • Eilers' had five strikeouts in the game against Butler and pushes her seasonal total to a team-leading 22. 
  • In both games, it was Huneycutt involved in the Catamounts scoring with a home run against Butler and reaching base on a Memphis error that allowed Hayes to score. 
  • Ashlyn Long extended her on-base streak to eight straight games. 
  • The Catamounts are on an eight-game losing streak after starting the season 2-2. 
  • The Catamounts have been run-ruled in two of the last three games. 
  • Huneycutt has hit three homeruns on the season just one shy of tying her seasonal mark of four in her rookie campaign in 2019.
