MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Western Carolina exploded for three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Belmont 5-2 in the nightcap game of day two of the U of M Tournament hosted by Memphis Saturday. The Catamounts dropped the first game of the day 4-2 to Youngstown State.

Youngstown State 4, Western Carolina 2
Turning Point
Western Carolina battled back to tie the game, after being down early 2-0, knotting the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth only to see Youngstown State retake the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

 How it Happened
  • Youngstown State took the early 2-0 lead in the third inning snapping a scoreless stalemate. A Western Carolina error with one out put a runner on and then a Penguin home run gave them the lead.
  • The Catamounts battled back scoring a pair of runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning. Amber Parker hit into a fielder's choice and with two outs senior Erica Hayes hit a two-run home run to center to knot the game.
  • Western Carolina's lead was short-lived as Youngtown State plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Catamounts had a chance to rally after a pair of walks by Myra Twitty and Kylie Shay had runners at first and second and the go-ahead run at the plate. A strikeout to end the inning also ended the game for the Catamounts.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman pitcher Savannah  Rice tossed the complete game giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and struck out four.
  • Western Carolina had four hits in the game while Youngstown State had five.
  • Hayes was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

 Western Carolina 5, Belmont 2
 Turning Point
Western Carolina scored four unanswered runs to overcome a 2-1 deficit tying the game with a run in the top of the sixth and three in the seventh.

 How it Happened
  • Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead scoring in the top of the second. Hayes hit into a fielder's choice erasing Amber Parker who reached on a walk. Hayes stole second and Addie Pate singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. Lindsay Perillo hit an RBI single through the left side scoring Hayes.
  • Belmont answered right back with a run in the bottom of the second to knot the game at one.
  • The Bruins took the lead in the bottom of the fourth capitalizing on bases loaded scoring from a RBI fielder's choice.
  • The Catamounts proved they had fight tying the game in the top of the sixth, 2-2. Kailey McNeil drew a lead-off walk and was replaced at first by pinch runner Claudia Riddle. A ground out pushed Riddle to second setting up a huge two out RBI double by Pate to tie the game.
  • Western Carolina had its biggest inning of the tournament in the top of the seventh all with two outs. It all began with pinch hitter Anna Paige Pelfrey's lead- off walk. After two quick outs, which sent Pelfrey to second, it was all up to Bailey Huneycutt to keep the inning alive – she didn't disappoint. Huneycutt blasted an RBI single up the middle scoring Pelfrey to give WCU a 3-2 lead but WCU wasn't finished. The cushion began when McNeil singled through the left side pushing Huneycutt to second. Parker drew a walk to load the bases and that was when the fun began. Hayes came up and hit a two RBI double down the left field line to push the Catamount lead to 5-2.
  • In the bottom of the seventh relief pitcher Savannah Rice faced just three Belmont batters in an unconventional way. After an error put a Bruin on first, the Catamounts turned a double play and got a pop up to short stop to halt any Belmont rally attempt.

Inside the Box Score
  • Senior Kinsey Liscio got the start tossing 3.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits and struck out three.
  • With one out in the fourth, Liscio was lifted and replaced by Kayla Brewer. She threw 0.2 scoreless innings with one walk.
  • Freshman hurler Rice replaced Brewer tossing three scoreless innings allowing only one hit and facing 11 batters. She takes the win improving to 2-3 on the season.
