Softball Falls to Indiana St. in Sunday Finale at U of M Tourney

Catamounts return home this week to host Radford

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Western Carolina softball closed out play at the U of M Tournament, hosted by Memphis, with a 7-1 loss to Indiana State Sunday morning at the Softball Stadium,
 
Turning Point 
Indiana State benefited from a big four-run fourth inning and five errors in the game by Western Carolina.
 
How it Happened 
  • Indiana State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth benefiting from the first of five Catamount errors in the contest.
  • In the third inning, Western Carolina cut the Sycamores' lead to one with a run. Junior Addie Pate led off the inning with a single past second base. Pate motored over to third with back-to-back ground outs. Ashlyn Long's RBI double to centerfield scored Pate for the Catamounts lone run in the game.
  • Indiana State exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth parlaying three of its runs off three Catamount errors.
  • The Sycamores' scored its seventh run of the game off a home run in the fifth.
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Indiana State had eight hits in the game while WCU had four.
  • The Sycamores' stranded six runners on base while the Catamounts left three.
  • Freshman Savannah Rice started the game going 4.1 innings giving up seven runs, five earned, on six hits and striking out two. She takes the loss in the contest and falls to 2-4.
  • With one out in the fifth, Jayme Eilers took over for Rice. She tossed 2.2 innings scoreless innings giving up two hits and striking out one.
  • Long had a hit and an RBI while Pate had a hit and a run scored.
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Eilers leads the pitching staff with 23 strikeouts.
  • Western Carolina is 1-9 over the last 10 games.
  • In the U of M Tournament Erica Hayes had a .375 batting average with six hits, three runs scored, three doubles, a home run and four RBI.
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina returns home this week for a three-game series with Radford. The Catamounts will play a single game at 5 p.m. Tuesday and a doubleheader set to start at noon Wednesday against the Highlanders.
