JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Western Carolina women's basketball fell on the road at ETSU 76-49 Thursday in Brooks Gym.
Turning Point:
ETSU came out hitting on all cylinders in the first quarter outscoring the Catamounts 28-8 and that was all the Bucs needed to coast to a win.
Individual Leaders:
- Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant led the Catamounts with 14 points.
- Senior Farasia Hodge had a good night on the boards coming off the bench to rip down eight rebounds.
- E'Lease Stafford led ETSU with 29 points hitting six of the Bucs' 10 three-pointers in the game.
Inside the Box Score:
- ETSU's big 28-point first quarter was aided by four three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
- After giving up four three-pointers to the Bucs in the first quarter, Western Carolina gave up six in the final three quarters for a total of 10 treys.
- ETSU benefitted from being allowed to go to the line 23 times in the game hitting 20.
- The Catamounts ended the game coughing up the ball 21 times watching ETSU turn those miscues into 17 points.
- ETSU held Western Carolina to single-digit scoring in the first and fourth quarters.
- Despite being held to 49 points, Western Carolina had a decent shooting night at 40 percent with ETSU shooting 42 percent.
- ETSU ripped down 38 rebounds and held the Catamounts to 29 boards on the night.
- The Catamounts scored just three second-chance points.
News & Notes:
- LaPlant kept her three-point streak alive hitting at least one three-pointer in all 23 games on the season.
- LaPlant hit a pair of three-pointers against ETSU moving into a tie for sixth place with 61 three-pointers in the WCU record books for most three-pointers in a season. She needs seven three-pointers before the end of the season to break the program record.
- The Catamounts five three-pointers against the Buccaneers give WCU 160 three-pointers on the season as the team continues to rank fourth in the record books. Western Carolina needs eight for third place.
- LaPlant has scored in double figures in eight of the last nine games.
- In conference play, LaPlant is averaging 12.4 points per game and has hit 21 three-pointers.
- Jewel Smalls has 298 points on the season and is 32 points from equaling her seasonal point total from her freshman campaign,
