Catamounts Knock Off the Mocs in Chattanooga 61-53

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Four Catamounts scored in double figures as Western Carolina women's basketball bounced back in a big way rolling into McKenzie Arena and shocking Chattanooga 61-53 Saturday.  
The victory at Chattanooga was the Catamounts' first win at the Mocs' home base since 2009. 
 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina led for over 36 minutes in the game, but the dagger shot came from rookie Alyssa Walker in her home state. The Maryville, Tenn. native drained an ice-cold three-pointer with the Catamounts leading by two, 55-53, with 1:14 left to all but dash the Mocs' hopes of a game-tying or game-leading bucket.  
 
 
Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Tembre Moates paced the four Catamounts in double figures with 14 points adding seven rebounds. 
  • Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant and senior Judith Martin Ruiz each had 13 points. 
  • Freshman Andrea Martin Ruiz rounded out the double-figure scoring for WCU with 10. She also had six assists.  
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls had a solid six points and eight rebounds. 
  • Chattanooga's Bria Dial led all scorers with 20 points. 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina scored 30 points in the first 20 minutes of the game. 
  • The Catamounts held Chattanooga to just two field goals in the second quarter and seven points. 
  • WCU scored in double figures in all four quarters. 
  • Western Carolina scored 30 of its points inside the paint. 
  • Each team had 31 rebounds with WCU getting 28 off the defensive glass. 
  • As a team, Western Carolina shot a season-best 51.1 percent from the field. The Catamounts held the Mocs to 30.9 percent.
  • The Catamounts were 6-of-8 from the free-throw line including 3-of-4 in the final 30 seconds of the game. Chattanooga was 13-of-15 from the charity stripe. 
  • WCU hit seven three-pointers in the game while Chattanooga hit six.
 
News & Notes
  • Lauren LaPlant kept her three-point streak alive hitting at least one three-pointer in all 24 games on the season. 
  • LaPlant hit three three-pointers against Chattanooga moving into a tie for fourth place with 64 three-pointers in the WCU record books for most three-pointers in a season. She needs four three-pointers before the end of the season to break the program record. 
  • The Catamounts seven three-pointers against the Mocs give WCU 167 three-pointers on the season as the team continues to tie for third in the record books. Western Carolina needs one to take over third place and seven for second place. 
  • LaPlant has scored in double figures in nine of the last 10 games. 
  • Western Carolina's victory over Chattanooga halts a 21-game losing streak to the Mocs. Prior t the victory on Saturday, the last win at Chattanooga came on Feb. 21, 2009 - a 56-52 win. 
  • The 61 points Western Carolina scored against Chattanooga is the most points the Catamounts have posted against the Mocs since scoring 66 points in a loss on Jan. 16, 2010 at Chattanooga. 
  • Moates has scored in double figures in three of the last four games. 
  • In SoCon play, LaPlant is averaging 12.4 points per game while Moates is at 10.1 per game. 
  • Smalls has 239 rebounds on the season ranking 20th in the WCU record books for rebounds in a season. It is the most rebounds by a Catamount since former player Sherae Bonner had 247 in the 2016-17 season. 
  •  The victory over Chattanooga was also career win number 299 for Head Coach Kiley Hill. He has a chance to hit that 300-win milestone next Saturday at home. 
  • The five wins on the season are the most since the 2016-17 season when the team had nine wins. The two conference wins in the 2019-20 season are also the most since that 2016-17 campaign.
