Kiawah Island, S.C. – Opening the three-day event on the Osprey Point Golf Club course, Western Carolina women's golf carded an opening-round 299 to sit amidst a three-way tie for 15th overall after 18 holes at the Kiawah Island Classic, the largest women's golf tournament in the country. The Catamounts are tied with Elon and the College of Charleston 'B' team with two rounds to play.
Sophomore
Madison Isaacson paced the Catamount scoring five with a 1-over par, 73, to sit in a 17-way tie for 31st overall in the 264-golfer field. Opening with a birdie on the par-3 15th, Isaacson carded birdies on two of her first four holes to open the day at 2-under par. She countered four bogeys with one additional birdie over the final 14 holes.
Junior
Maya White is a stroke back at 2-over par 74, tied for 48th, countering six bogeys with four birdies on Sunday while senior
Brianna Plummer is a stroke in arrears, tied for 68th with a first-round score of 3-over par, 75. A product of Shelby, N.C., Plummer is tied for seventh in the field with 14 pars over the opening 18 holes, charting two bogeys, one double-bogey, with one birdie.
Rounding out the Catamount scoring five are junior
Hazel Martin in a tie for 108th at 5-over par 77 with freshman
Victoria Ladd in a tie for 140th overall after shooting 7-over par, 79. Martin recovered from a 4-over par start with three birdies on the front nine before charting a bogey and a double-bogey over her final three holes.
Playing unattached as an individual on the Cougar Point course, junior
Cameron Wood sits eighth after shooting a 9-over par round of 81 on Sunday. Wood countered three bogeys with a pair of birdies on the front nine to make the turn to the back at 1-over par. Over her final nine holes on the opening day, the Waxhaw, N.C., native charted two additional bogeys and a trio of double-bogeys for the 9-over par round. Ladd was poised for a 4-over round until a triple-bogey on her final hole on Sunday.
Tournament host College of Charleston paces the 53-team field by seven strokes over second-place, IUPUI, 281-to-288. Boston University and Florida Gulf Coast are tied for third at 289 with SCAD – Savannah (292) rounding out the top five.
Other Southern Conference schools in the field include Wofford (293) in sixth, UNCG (2960 in a tie for ninth, Samford (306) in 27th, and The Citadel (341) in 51st overall.
Action resumes on all three courses at the Kiawah Island Resort on Monday with the first of two shotgun waves at 9:00 am between the Osprey Point and Oak Point Golf Clubs. Paired with golfers from Fairleigh Dickinson, the Catamount scoring five hits the course in the afternoon wave shotgun start between the third and sixth holes of the Oak Point course. The individual tournament at Cougar Point gets underway at 12:10 pm with Wood teeing off at 12:40 pm.
