GREENSBORO, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball opened Southern Conference play with a big 49-42 road win at UNCG Sunday in Fleming Gymnasium.

Turning Point:
An offensive stalemate, in which the teams only scored four points a-piece in the first quarter, took a turn when WCU exploded in the second quarter to outscore 17-7. It was the second quarter output and 6-of-7 from the free throw in the final minute of the game that led to the win.

 Individual Leaders
  • Andrea Martin Ruiz returned to the line-up, after missing three games, to lead the team with 12 points against UNCG.
  • Zanoria Cruz just missed scoring in double points with nine.
  • Kyla Allison had two points, six rebounds, and five assists.
  • CeCe Crudup led UNCG with 15 points.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina was just edged in rebounds 29-28 but the Catamounts pounded the class on the defensive side with 22.
  • With the game tied 4-4 to open the second quarter, rookie Zanoriz Cruz's back-to-back three-pointers spurred a 10-0 run by the Catamounts to take the lead over UNCG and never relinquish it.
  • UNCG had a strong third quarter outscoring the Catamounts 16-10 but WCU weathered the Spartans edging the team when they cut the WCU lead to one in the third and two in the fourth.
  • In the fourth, with WCU clinging to a 33-31 lead, the Catamounts went on an 8-0 lead to build a 41-31 lead. The Spartans would never get that close again.
