Catamounts Drop SoCon Home Opener to Samford

Catamounts and Bulldogs match-up again Saturday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball dropped the first of back-to-back games against Samford 84-49 Thursday in the Ramsey Center. The Catamounts and Bulldogs will meet again in 48 hours at 2 p.m. Saturday. 
 
Turning Point:
After Western Carolina went up 2-0 after an administrative technical foul was assessed to Samford, the Bulldogs outscored the Catamounts 22-10 in the first quarter and 24-10 in the second to set a scoring pace WCU could not keep up with. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt senior Tembre Moates had a strong game inside leading the Catamounts with 12 points. 
  • Redshirt senior Lauren LaPlant swiped a career-high four steals. 
  • Joi Reid ripped down six rebounds. 
  • Samford's Natalie Armstrong led all scorers with 19 points. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Samford shot a scorching 53.6 percent from the field and holding the Catamounts to 32.1 percent. 
  • The Bulldogs connected on nine three-pointers in the game while WCU hit one behind the three-point arch. 
  • Samford won the rebound battle 32 to 25 with 25 of the Bulldogs boards on the defensive end. 
  • The Bulldogs scored 34 of its points inside the paint. 
  • The Catamounts had a solid showing in the second quarter as Samford just edged WCU 18 to 15 in scoring. 
  • The Catamounts were 14 of 16 from the free-throw line. 
 
 News & Notes
  • LaPlant had her 40-consecutive games hitting a three-pointer streak snapped as she was 0-of-6 from the three-point line against Samford. 
  • The Catamounts extended its three-point streak as a team – WCU has hit at least one three-pointer in 344 straight games dating back to 2009. 
  • The loss to Samford halted the Catamount's two-game winning streak. The Catamounts have now lost 15-straight to Samford. 
  • Western Carolina has scored under 50 points in the last two games – scoring 49 points against UNCG and Samford.
